Compromise is always simple to rationalize, but true leaders recognize that character is a daily battle worth winning. Article 6 of the Honor Code keeps it simple: “Live your values. Be faithful to your spiritual core, your conscience, and your deepest intuitions.”
Values are caught more than taught. During my years as a POW in Vietnam, cellblock life stripped away modern distractions, leaving our values as our central focus. Watching courageous leaders stand firm under extreme hardship rubbed off on the rest of us.
Your personal character inevitably drives your team’s culture. Here are three quick action steps to keep your values at the core of your leadership:
1. Clarify your non-negotiables:
Define what you stand for today. Reflect on your faith, professional ethics, and foundational beliefs before the test comes.
2. Commit courageously:
Stand firm when busyness, fear, or the temptation for comfort try to take you off course. Accept the temporary sacrifice required to stay true.
3. Act in congruence:
Align your daily actions with your identity. We all stumble at times; when you miss the mark, admit it, learn, and bounce back.
Leading with honor requires intentional maintenance. Fuel your core through continuous reflection, surround yourself with people who elevate your character, and guard against influences that erode your standards.
Unshakable trust and enduring integrity are worth every struggle. How do you keep your core values front and center with your team?
